Girl.
I am beginning to realize that a lot of pop songs are written so catchy,
so pretty, that the listener has no idea of what is being said in the lyrics.
On the surface, this song written by Beck sounds like your average love song.
In my horror, I understood the lyrics more likely to be about a psycho
who plans to eliminate some strange girl and take her eyeball.
My mind somehow drew a comparison. I believe that Leonardo da Vinci
who was commissioned by his patrons- the Medici Family- to do a lot
of work where the subject matter would be a portrait or a painting
along Biblical themes. But if you look in the background of piece
such as the Mona Lisa, you realize that is WHERE Leonardo is
making giant ABSTRACTIONS, HE IS HAVING FUN, EQUAL TO OR BETTER
THAN THE MODERNISTS OR THE ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST, 500 YEARS EARLIER.
So, yeah, I know that Beck is not Leonardo da Vinci, but the PRINCIPLE
is the SAME: GIVE the AUDIENCE what it WANTS on the surface but
have your FUN WHERE IT IS LEAST EXPECTED. Hey, ya know, people gotta
make cash, gotta eat.

Ted, I’ll take your word about the song–not sure I’d like it. Sure do appreciate hidden goodies in art, though! Clever.
