For I indeed once saw with my own eyes the Sibyl at Cumae hanging in her jar, and when the boys asked her, ‘Sibyl, what do you want?’ she answered ‘I want to die’.
This is the epigraph to T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land.
About the Cumaean Sibyl: Some dude (Apollo), interested in poor Sibyl’s virginity, offered to grant her a wish in exchange for–well, you know. Sibyl, with alacrity, asked for eternity (she was an underachiever). But later when she refuse the dude’s frequent lubricious advances, he allowed her to grow old and to wither away. Eternal life, yes. Eternal youth, not so much. So decrepit and shriveled did her body become that she had to be kept in a jar.
