Simple Twist of Fate, (audio)

Simple Twist of Fate

I am going to say a few words about the artist who wrote this song.
Some of you may already know. Growing up as a punk musician, this man
was the anti-thesis of what I was about. I literally could not stand
what I considered at the time to be droning vocals and way way to
heavily repeated chord progressions. I was like, “freakin god turn that
shit off!” Usually my friend playing this on the jambox, would reply,
“You will not understand his music, until you have lived his music.”
Well, one day, I came home from work and school, to the woman that
I thought , I really thought, I was going to spend the rest of my life with.
I had roses and wine. She was gone, everything was gone, all the stuff,
our cottage was empty. All that remained was a pack of cigarettes and
a boombox with a tape in it. The tape played this song,
the album was Blood on the Tracks by bob dylan.
I broke into tears. I understood. Dylan would later say that you would
have to be SICK fucking SICK to like that record, it was about divorce.
I did all this buildup, so the “dylan haters” may give this song a chance.
I haven’t listened to this song in about 15 years. Just did, I broke down sobbing.
And then rolled tape, and this is my recording of the tune.
I am not doing this for some sort of pity party, it is good to cry from
time to time. Hope you like this!

  1. As a Punk, I would have said the same back in the day. My Dad and many friends loved Dylan though and you absorb what’s around. My former was a huge Dylan fan and a musician who favours that genre, though I’ve never heard this particular tune. You’ve done this beautifully and yes, tears are definitely good from time to time. Music is permission to feel sometimes, I think…

    • In my experience, it is much better for me to feel, feeling is living.
Tho, I have to be mindful not to have my feelings so easily agitated
as if they are a sore thumb smashed with a massive hammer.
So happy that you enjoyed my version. I would like to add that you are very very
productive in your writing, at a fervor rate!

this is the first time I hear his song, um, I’m not a fan of his tunes lol… but I love the lyrics in this one…
and I fully relate to what you have written… no pity party from me (and I even had to google its meaning lol 🙂 been there, felt that… life goes on… 🙂

    • Glad you can relate. Funny to me that it is a bit more cheerful. The way
he does it is really bitter and haunting, spiteful.
