Hang You from the Heavens (cover)

Just a note on why the recording sounds the way it does.
I was trying to get a really scratchy old sound, like an old 78 record of a blues man
on a Victrola player, some sort of Decca recording. I wanted the song to sound as if
it came from hell, or a person who had been there and back again. That being said,
this is not pretty.

Hang You from the Heavens.

(lyrics)
I never know how to treat you
You think I love you but it ain’t true
I’m walking away now
One step forward and back two

I like to grab you by the hair
And hang you up from the heavens

I don’t know how to let you go
Or if i should keep you
I don’t know how to let you know
I really don’t got a reason

I like to grab you by the hair
And drag you to the devil

I never know why I push you
Trash you just to confuse you
I make a hole just to see how
See through clean I can cut you

I like to grab you by the hair
And hang you up from the heavens

I’d like to grab you by the hair
And sell you off to the devil

I never know what mood you be
Be mine be kind but be cruel to me
I’m walking away now
One step forward and back three

I never know what I’m gonna to do
I say I’m leaving but it ain’t true
I got a lot I could do to you
Nothing you can do to stop it

I want to grab you by the hair
I want to grab you by the hair
I want to grab you by the hair
And hang you up from the heavens

    • I can’t really explain, how I did that..Used a couple mono tracks live with 2 stereo tracks live, compressed it, 30 band equalized it, sent it to another program, from their I was able to get the record sound. Messed up thing is that that was Live, just doesn’t sound like it. What is worse, the dead weather wrote that with roughly two notes altogether.

      • You did a lot of work. For some reason and this is how my brain works, I figured you would put a dusty album on and record the part after the last song, that scratchy “great sound” before the needle starts bumping into the felt paper. Too simple I guess. I totally miss the sound of the needle on vinyl and the crackle of the dust. Vinyl is such a different sound, my preference. Does anyone other than me still have a turntable? Ha-ha! πŸ™‚ Isn’t Jack somewhat a very complicated minimalist in a strange way?

      • Ya know, your idea of how to get that sound is more practical, easier to accomplish. Jack made the song cohesive. It is all glued and interesting because of the way he plays the trapset. I was surprised to find out the music was that simple. When you watch the Dead Weather play, the music seems really difficult.

  1. Yeah, you can record it and then make a loop. That’s what I would do. I’m curious how that will work out, I hope you give it a try. I remember somewhere Jack talked about the beauty of simplicity and layers. That’s probably why I love his stuff so much, it’s clean, layered and just beautiful art.

      • Okay, let’s cheat, see if SoundCloud has that sound effect, or some other site online. I sure it’s out there. Even pick a really old Blues Tune with a long intro and mic it. I would think you could capture the crackling sound. What do you think, as long as we are outside the box?

      • My bet would be Soundcloud does not have that. You know, I could do a search online, to see how those old recordings were made. Try to mimic it. A lot of that stuff was dependent on the room in which it was made. Like old houses n’ stuff. I think the idea of the way I could mic it, could make the whole difference. Hey, as long as you are giving me fun stuff to do. Which blues tune should I do?Keep in mind, I do not want to use a slide on the guitar. I could deal with drop D tuning. But no open tuning.
